Contrary to what my husband may or may not have told you, I am not "temporarily out of the state on family business." He's just been saying that to cover up that I joined a band of Irish Travellers who used to follow the Grateful Dead and started their own circus after Jerry Garcia died. Okay, I'm lying. I've really been in Canada having gender reassignment surgery. Okay, that's not true, either. Read more about you miss me. admit it.

me = lame like basil

...actually, that's not true at all. I don't think basil is lame. I like basil. A lot.

I know my presence here has been sketchy lately. And I know I completely flaked on this week's Oh, Betty! post.

You may commence flogging now.

But really, all of this absentia is totally worth it because I've got some good stuff going on.  Read more about me = lame like basil

My first child was born on October 23. Which is probably a really good thing, because if he hadn't shown up by Halloween, I had planned to go to my OB appointment (scheduled for that date) with my enormous midsection painted orange with black triangle eyes, nose and jagged-toothed mouth.

Like I said, I have a life-long love for Halloween in general and costumes in particular.  Read more about ghosts of halloweens past - costumes, part 2

Today, I begin a brief but much-needed reprieve from Christmas. I know the Holiday Mall is a mere 15 days away, but Halloween is in only ten. (I can count! Who's impressed?!?)

Given my flair for the dramatic, it's probably no surprise Halloween is my absolute favoritest holiday EVER. Or that my favoritest part of Halloween is...costumes.

I *heart* costumes. Read more about All the world's a stage and we need costumes - Part 1

Full disclosure--I didn't even realize it was Thursday until mid-afternoon. But because I love you, I immediately raced to my kitchen (knocking over my chair and crippling a cat in the process), opened the Betty Box, and started looking for something I (a) had all the ingredients for on-hand; (b) wouldn't have to spend several days preparing; and (c) wouldn't make my children, my husband, or me throw up.

I found it. Read more about Oh, Betty! - Pork Chop Scallop (American Classics, Card #17)

Meet Harley and Jake, who I acquired when we bought our house four years ago. As soon as we became homeowners, our first priority was not furniture or appliances--no, we wanted livestock. My husband wanted a "substantial dog"; I wanted a cat. The dog was an easy find--a local shelter often put their inmates on display in front of our neighborhood pet supply store, and when we drove by one Saturday, there she was. The cat, however, was not such a simple acquisition. Read more about there's no such thing as a "free" cat

I Call a Do-Over

Today is not shaping up to be the best of days. Since both boys are home, I'd planned to take them to the pumpkin patch and waste a few hours there, then come home and do some sewing. Read more about I Call a Do-Over

Hug a Wingnut Week!

I just found out yesterday this was National Mental Illness Awareness Week.

How did I not know this?

Not that I'm unfamiliar with mental illness--me and mental illness are tight. If you want to know how tight, take a look-see at my other blog. (Although I will warn you, it's not nearly the shiny-happy Rainbow Brite celestial garden this one is. It's kind of the Anti-ThisAin'tDenny's.)  Read more about Hug a Wingnut Week!

"Here's twenty bucks, son--go find yourself a nice Irish girl."*

My father has always been proud to tell anyone who can't get away from him quick enough that his side of our family hails from the Emerald Isle. I was able to confirm this while tracing our family history this summer, although like most other Americans, our bloodline is about as pure as water from the Missouri River. Boo!

Now that it's October, I suppose it's time for me to grudgingly accept that Summer does not last forever and it will, in fact, be dark and cold and disgusting sooner than later.

<Sigh.>

Until it is, however, I will take full advantage of the sun and warm days and celebrate the Fall. I like Fall, I'd just like it a whole lot more if it were immediately followed by Summer again. That would be awesome.

A festive mood demands festive decor, so this weekend, I tunneled through the garage and got out... Read more about Boo!
